Interior designer Thom Filicia recalls being profoundly influenced as a teenager by The Big Chill, the 1983 film in which a group of college pals come together 20 years after graduation at the home of Sarah and Harold Cooper for a friend's funeral.
Twenty-six years after that reunion, Filicia has transformed this downtown abode into a New York roost the Coopers would have designed. The result is a home that welcomes friends while celebrating their favorite artists and remaining in step with the pace of change.
Here, Filicia shares a few tips:
Filicia's fondness for blending materials, textures and shapes is reflected in every room of the house. The living room combines leather wing chairs and a coffee table of mixed woods, while an oversize glossy portrait of wild horses dominates the dining room. Also in the dining room, a circular sculpture forged from metal farm machinery is echoed in a custom round carpet laid over a sisal rug and in Filicia's playful interpretation of the klismos chair.
Add interest to nondescript spaces. Determined to turn distracting architectural niches into "eye candy," Filicia installed a massive ebonized Italian cabinet with a glass front in the living room, and designed a bookcase for legal volumes with colorful spines for another niche adjacent to the kitchen. As an additional layer of interest, he hung a painting of an airplane by Bob Moody in front of the kitchen bookcase. It adds depth while celebrating the art.
Don't be limited by the existing space. Filicia created "a custom look" for the master bedroom, repeating the baseboard detail in horizontal battens. Painted in Ralph Lauren Pale Grey, they contrast against walls finished in Ralph Lauren Palais Royal.
The Coopers' embrace of technology and their love of music are evident in their home. For their townhouse, Filicia specified an automated audiovisual control system by Savant. This Apple-based platform controls lighting and audio via wall-mounted and tabletop touch panels, allowing "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" to be broadcast throughout the house.
